How to Build a Moisture Routine for Dry Hair

June 15, 2026 · By Racheal Heard

Dry hair is one of the most common concerns among women with natural hair — and one of the most misunderstood. Most women reach for more product when their hair feels dry. But adding more to already thirsty hair without the right strategy often makes things worse, not better.

True moisture isn't about how much product you use. It's about how well your hair is able to absorb and retain it.

Why Natural Hair Gets Dry

Natural hair — especially hair with tight curl patterns — has a harder time retaining moisture than straight hair. The coils and bends in the hair shaft make it difficult for your scalp's natural oils to travel down the length of the strand. This means natural hair relies heavily on external moisture sources to stay hydrated and healthy.

Add heat styling, color treatments, hard water, and harsh products to the mix, and you have a recipe for chronic dryness that no amount of conditioner can fix on its own.

The LOC Method — Your New Best Friend

The LOC method is one of the most effective moisture layering techniques for natural hair. Here's how it works:

L — Liquid
Start with water or a water-based leave-in conditioner. Water is the only true source of moisture for your hair. Everything else seals it in.

O — Oil
Apply a lightweight botanical oil to seal the moisture in. Our Intensive Follicle Repair Oil is perfect for this step — it absorbs quickly without leaving residue, while nourishing your scalp and strands at the same time.

C — Cream
Finish with a curl cream or butter to lock everything in and define your pattern. This final layer acts as a barrier, keeping moisture inside the strand throughout the week.

Your Weekly Moisture Routine

  • Wash Day: Cleanse with Cherry Detox Shampoo, deep condition for 30 minutes, apply LOC method while hair is soaking wet
  • Day 3: Refresh with a water and leave-in spritz, seal with a small amount of oil
  • Day 5: Scalp massage with Intensive Follicle Repair Oil to stimulate circulation and replenish ends
  • Night Routine: Sleep on a satin pillowcase or in a satin bonnet every night to prevent moisture loss

Signs Your Routine Is Working

After 4 to 6 weeks of consistent moisture practice, you should notice your hair feeling softer and more pliable, fewer single-strand knots and tangles, less breakage during detangling, and more defined curl pattern with less frizz.

Moisture isn't a one-time fix — it's a practice. Build the habit and your hair will show you the results.
